Cardiac Arrest
Did you know that less than 10% of people survive out-of-hospital cardiac arrest??
10 PERCENT.
I don’t know about you, but that number does not sit well with me.
American Heart Association:
“Globally, cardiac arrest claims more lives than colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, influenza, pneumonia, auto accidents, HIV, firearms, and house fires combined.”
The reason I want to shed some light on this topic is because YOU can help. Whether you have EMS experience or not.
CPR is a basic skill in EMS & is actually required for a number of jobs outside of health care.
A lot of people are familiar with the concept of CPR but don’t completely understand why it’s so important.
During cardiac arrest your heart stops beating. This cuts off blood flow to the brain & other organs. THIS IS LIFE THREATENING. & you need to start CPR immediately & call 911.
American Heart Association:
“If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest.”
If your current job does not offer a First Aid/CPR/ AED class, you can find them online or in your area that cost as low as $10.
I understand that money can be tight, but $10 could save someone’s mom, son, grandpa, or best friend.
Some helpful tips:
* CPR 101 - 30 compressions, 2 breaths
* You can purchase a pocket mask on Amazon for $6 (acts as a BVM before EMS arrives)
* To keep pumping your heart at its natural rhythm, you can sing “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees while giving compressions.
* Make yourself comfortable with the AED placement in your workplace or whenever you are out (restaurant, shopping mall, etc.)
It takes a short amount of time to educate yourself about First Aid/CPR/AED & that short amount of time could save a life in the future!! It’s worth it.
LET’S SAVE LIVES TOGETHER.
Thank you for reading.
Much love,
