Step-by-step instructions on how to recertify your NREMT.

  • Disclaimer!! This is from my personal experience & I don’t speak for anyone else but myself.

    • First Step

Go to NREMT website & create an account (if you don’t already have one)

    • Second Step

Complete the Recertification by Exam application & pay the exam fee. ($20)

    • Third Step

After 24 to 48 hours check your NREMT account for your

    Authorization To Test (ATT) form.

Within that letter it will have all the information you need on how to schedule your exam.

It is super simple, you basically just pick a date that’s available at Pearson Vue, & go.

Important tip: You may make one attempt to take and pass the exam between April 1 (one year prior to your current expiration date) and March 31 (your expiration date). If you don’t pass, don’t freak out. Just complete your CE’s.

    • Fourth Step

After you pass the exam, there will be a Cognitive Competency by Exam form available on your NREMT account.

Return the completed form by March 31st with all of the needed signatures & supporting documentation.

    • Fifth Step

Go into your app or NREMT browser & finish the information needed with your application.

All other recertification requirements (including criminal conviction statement, verification of skills, etc.) must still be met and verified.

    • First Step

Download the NREMT app, or just use the browser & create an account if you don’t already have one.

App: NREMT (It has a white star of life with blue background & red letters)

    https://nremt.org/

(KEEP THIS IN THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD, moving on..)

    • Second Step

Find a CAPCE ( The Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education) approved CE course!

I recommend CE Solutions, which is the one I will use until my EMS days are over.

The whole course, whether its EMT or Medic, has everything you need included in the package & you can do it over a year span or cram it in a month (which is what I did).

    • Third Step

    Finish your CE’s (duh)

As you finish your CE’s, log them into your NREMT app.

You will need ALL of these to renew your NREMT!!

    • National Component

    • Airway/ Respiratory/ Ventilation

    • Cardiovascular

    • Trauma

    • Medical

    • Operations

    • Local or State Component

    *Local or State Component*

These are your random extra courses which will be called your “Distributive courses,” or your courses associated with the state you live in. For example, I used; Pediatric Cardiac Arrest & my Texas Jurisprudence (I needed the Texas Jurisprudence when I was applying for my Texas EMT license anyways)

    *Individual Component*

This is also your random extra “Distributive courses.” For example, I used; Bloodborne Pathogens, EMS Response to Active Shooter& Management of Geriatric Trauma. Amber

    • Fourth Step

Go into your app or browser & finish the information needed with your application

Upload your remaining CE Certificates, if you haven’t already

    • Personal information

    • Criminal conviction statement

    • Fifth Step

    Payment! (Mine was $20)

    ——————————————————————————————————————

After all of that, you’re not done yet..

As an EMS provider, there is what they call an “Active” or “Inactive” status.

When you nationally certify for the first time you are automatically prompted to an “Active” status whether you are working or not.

If you choose to NOT work under your EMT license for a generous amount of time in those first 2 years, they encourage you to change your status to “Inactive.” But, to become “Active” again you have to submit an application with your new employer that your training officer/ supervisor has to sign.

For the first two years, your “Active” status will remain the same unless you decide to change it. But, If you choose to renew after 2 years & are still NOT working for an EMS agency, your national certification will automatically go to “Inactive” until you affiliate with an EMS agency.

During the time I was not working under my EMT license I never had an “Inactive” status because I didn’t know any of this.

    ——————————————————————————————————————

For people who are currently working for an EMS agency:

If you currently work for an EMS agency this hopefully means you’re “Active,” & you have to get affiliated with your employer before renewing.

(If you’re currently working for an EMS agency & renew without the affiliation online, your national will come back “Inactive.”)

You can do that in your NREMT app or at their website.

Log in & it will open up to your dashboard.

On the left hand side there’s a drop down menu under “My Current Role.”

    ** Choose “My Certification.”

On this page you will find a menu of options directly under your information.

    ** Choose “Manage Affiliations.”

From there it’s pretty self explanatory; enter your state & agency.

Once that is done, you will need your medical director/ training officer to approve it.

(If you don’t know who this is, ask your FTO, ODS, or anyone in admin honestly)

After you’ve been affiliated, your medical director will need to approve your skills verification.

After everything is signed off, then you just wait for NREMT to look over everything & approve it!

For people who are not currently working for an EMS agency:

If you’re currently NOT working under your EMT license & you’re still in that first 2 year mark, then you still might be “Active,” but if you’re not affiliated with an EMS agency by the time you renew your national then your status will automatically come back as “Inactive” until you affiliate.

When you renew with CE’s during an “Inactive” status, you are automatically waived from having to do the skills portion & from there you just wait for them to approve everything & you’re finished!
